Day 4

What a day! Today was by far the most beautiful day of all. We had such a good time today.

We woke up and had breakfast at the hotel, as usual. However, what wasn't usual was how good the breakfast was. They had biscuits and gravy that were actually super delicious, bacon, sausage, eggs, croissant sausage egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches, fresh coffee, bagels, muffins, and more. It really was nice to have such a good breakfast. We didn't take pictures because we didn't know it was going to be so good, so we didn't bring the camera.

We then head out!

We decided to take a scenic road instead of the interstate. Not only was it shorter, but it was so amazing. There were all grasslands on the sides of the roads, and there were cows, deer, and even buffalo! We had never seen so many deer before in our lives. There were packs of 10-20 deer all along the 110 miles of the highway. It was so cool!

There were also huge trains with SO many cars (we didn't count, but they were so long that we couldn't see the whole thing at once!

There were also very cool rock formations in Wyoming

And we could also see the mountains in the distance

We then entered Colorful Colorado. It totally lived up to it's name

A buffalo sign greeted us just a little while after we entered Colorado

Before getting to Denver we saw some signs for Qdoba and decided to stop for lunch. It was delicious! However, no pictures of that, we figured everyone'd seen a burrito before.

We then went slightly around Denver but got a great view of downtown

We were then on our way to the Rocky Mountains!

The Rocky Mountains were absolutely amazing. It's really, really indescribable. We would absolutely recommend anyone going to Rockies if they even have a slight desire to. I can't describe to you how beautiful it was, and the pictures don't do it justice.

We went through the famous Eisenhower Tunnel

Driving through the Rocky Mountains was kind of tough. There were lots of steep declines and it could be tough to stop at times. There were lots of warnings about trucks losing their brakes, and even runaway vehicle places to pull off

We then saw more of the beautiful Rockies

We then came to the Colorado River and we followed it all the way out of the Rockies. It was absolutely beautiful.

We really can't convey to you how big and beautiful it was. A truly amazing experience for us both.

We then got to Grand Junction, Colorado, where we are staying for the night.

Yelp told us about a great local brewery that is also a restaurant, so we decided to go there for dinner. I got a Buffalo Burger -- this one was much better than the last and came with horseradish cream cheese spread and sweet potato chips. Cathy got a bratwurst plate with 3 huge brats, garlic mashed potatoes and red cabbage. It was SO delicious.

We then went to our hotel for an early night and some rest.

Just an update on the license plate game -- we're done! Today we saw a Louisiana plate in Wyoming attached to a super fast Corvette. We then saw a South Carolina plate in the parking lot of our hotel. We also saw 2 more Alaska plates today. I wonder if we will see Hawaii before our trip is up?

Tomorrow we will be going to southern Utah, specifically Zion National Park. It's a short drive but we want to be able to do some things if we want to, or keep driving if we feel like it.

For tonight, however, it's time to go to sleep. Look for another blog post tomorrow night!

Love,

Tim and Cathy

  3. Hi Tim and Cathy,

These pics are amazing. Dad loves all the deer. He wants to go to the Rockies too! I love the fact that you found a QDOBA! So funny. The steepness of the mountain is unbelievable. You're so far away from your mother now. WOW. So glad you had a shorter day. Tomorrow sounds exciting! I am looking forward to it! Love you, your Dre

  9. Very, very rare to see a Hawaii plate--even in California...5000X bonus points if you do! Spectacular pix of Colorado and I expect scenic Utah will deliver as well. Planning to stop or drive through Vegas? Photos of Vegas at night are best due to the neon appeal. Qdoba has incorporated their mole sauce into their "bbq" sauce...delicious! Oh yes, grandma Hughes wanted you to know that the Hughes clan went from Welshpool, Wales to Wellington, Ohio in 1912 and that your grandpa Hughes went to church in nearby Loraine, Ohio. Have fun as you complete your 'Journey to the West.'
    See you soon,
    Cathy's dad
